Nickel-metal-hydride batteries pack a significant electrical punch in a compact, lightweight package. NiMH batteries have a wide operating temperature range and typically have a cycle life of about 1000 cycles.

Some applications that NiMh batteries can be used for are mobile phones and smartphones, laptops and tablets, digital cameras and camcorders, handheld game consoles and flashlights. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are a rechargeable alternative to lithium or alkaline batteries.
The principle of Nickel-Metal Hydride battery
The positive electrode of a nickel-hydrogen battery is composed of nickel hydride material, and the negative electrode is composed of cobalt hydride or other alloy materials. The electrolyte inside the battery is usually a potassium hydroxide solution. During the discharge process, the nickel hydride of the positive electrode releases hydrogen ions, and the hydride of the negative electrode absorbs these hydrogen ions and transfers them between the positive and negative electrodes through the electrolyte. When charging, the reaction process is reversed, hydrogen ions migrate from the negative electrode to the positive electrode, and nickel hydride is converted into nickel hydride again. This back-and-forth electrochemical reaction makes nickel-metal hydride batteries rechargeable.

Charging characteristics are one of the important characteristics of NiMH batteries. During the charging process of nickel-metal hydride batteries, the voltage will increase as the charging current increases and the charging temperature decreases. Therefore, at an ambient temperature of 0°C to 40°C, we should charge with a constant current of no more than 1C to obtain higher charging efficiency.Discharge characteristics: stable and long-lasting energy output
The discharge platform of nickel-metal hydride batteries is 1.2V. The greater the current and the lower the temperature, the discharge voltage and discharge efficiency will decrease. Generally, we set the discharge cut-off voltage to 0.9V because a stable current output can still be provided within this range. The setting of the discharge cut-off voltage requires a balance between capacity utilization and the risk of over-discharge.Self-discharge characteristics: long-term storage and reliable use
The self-discharge characteristic of nickel-metal hydride batteries refers to the phenomenon of self-depletion of capacity when stored under no load and fully charged conditions. The self-discharge characteristics are greatly affected by the ambient temperature. The higher the temperature, the greater the degree of self-discharge.
